Miami Mayor Francis Suarez would like the next president of the United States to be pro-Bitcoin.
President Francis Suarez: “We need a pro-Bitcoin US president.” Suarez said this when speaking at the Digital Mining Energy Conference hosted by Bitmain. Precisely in the Florida city that aspires to become a Bitcoin hub.
In his opening speech, the mayor of Miami talked about how he helped create an alternative Silicon Valley in his city.
He recalled that he was the first city to put Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper on its website.
Since then, Miami has taken big steps. So much so that its mayor was able to praise the growth with these words:
“Miami ranks first in the country for job growth in new technology, creating 8,000 jobs, and has turned over more than $800 billion in assets under management in the past 16 months. None of this would be possible without understanding the technological movement, Bitcoin, the blockchain and companies like Bitmain mean to feed the infrastructure of this new generation and revolution”.
But now is the time to move Bitcoin from the abstract to the concrete. The community must become – in his words – “evangelists” and explain how Bitcoin works and how it can improve society.
That’s what Suarez said, giving the concrete example of a manufacturing industry converted into a Bitcoin mining farm. In this case, the BTC managed to secure several jobs.
The Government’s Role in Supporting Bitcoin
Suarez then spoke about the importance of the government’s role. When a country has a class of government that wants to be innovative, you have what happened in Florida: laws supporting cryptocurrencies and Miami being the innovation capital.
But there are also cases where governments shut down certain sectors out of fear or create laws that make it impossible to do business.
For him, it is important to understand that governments are afraid of losing control. He believes it is essential to demystify this concept of control. He explained this by recalling the Uber case. Uber, he pointed out, created 14,000 drivers in a city where 25,000 taxi drivers already operated.
This meant that there was also a demand for this type of work, which had not been carried out. Uber was too big to be regulated, but it had its benefits, and so should cryptocurrencies.
A pro-Bitcoin US president
Suarez also highlighted that we cannot de-technologize the world, we can only ensure that technology is used in a healthy way and that people can learn more and more about it.
For this to happen, it is necessary:
- Learn a way to simplify what’s happening;
Learn to communicate change;
To have a pro-Bitcoin president as the next president of the United States.
Biden and Bitcoin
President Joe Biden’s guidance on cryptocurrencies has yet to be clearly defined. Certainly his right-hand man, Janet Yellen, seemed more concerned about risk than opportunity. This can translate into a stricter regulation.
Having a pro-Bitcoin president will avoid these risks. But Joe Biden’s term has just begun. We will have to wait until 2025 for another president who is open and capable of contributing to the development of the sector. At this point, however, we must hope that it is not too late.
