New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced that blockchain COVID-19 passports will appear on the market –

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on March 26that the city’s vaccination passports – “Excelsior Pass” will appear on the market. They will be based on blockchain technology.

Andrew Cuomo: New York Will Have COVID-19 Blockchain Passports

What exactly do we know about the initiative? The passport is issued through a free platform that verifies whether we have been vaccinated for COVID-19 or have tested negative for the virus. Everything is done via a QR code. The Excelsior Pass is designed to help defrost the market – reopen businesses and public places across New York City.

The Vaccination Passport is based on IBM’s digital health record, which is based on blockchain technology, and allows you to verify your identity, vaccination history, test results, and share them securely without revealing unrelated personal information.

In a city communiqué, Governor Cuomo stressed the importance of using new technologies to re-open markets in a way that serves both public health and the economy:

With more and more New Yorkers getting vaccinated each day and key public health ratings regularly hitting their lowest rates in months, the country’s first Excelsior Pass heralds the next step in our thoughtful, scientific reopening.

Steve LaFleche, CEO of IBM Public and Federal Markets, is proud to support the New York City reopening plan, stating:

IBM is proud to support the State of New York in its efforts to apply innovative technologies to help citizens and communities respond to COVID-19.

Andrew Cuomo first revealed plans to create a blockchain-based vaccination passport on March 2, after the system’s successful attempt at a Brooklyn Nets NBA match.

IOTA wants to create its COVID-19 passports

IOTA also wants to enter the COVID-19 passport market. The Foundation is currently in talks with the US government. The theme is to create a COVID-19 vaccination passport that would be based on blockchain technology.

– Our identity protocol is very close to reaching the full BETA level. Vaccination passport [na COVID-19] is one of the topics we are currently working on. We are now talking to American actors, including the government [USA]. We will see what role IOTA can play on vaccination passports in the coming weeks – Dominik Schiener from the organization recently said.
